Since most shipwrecks occurred at this location, it was necessary for the survivors to be able to save themselves during the first few hours. In 1953, the house was badly damaged and threatened to be lost. However, the then tourist office (Terschelling Vooruit) believed that it still had a function (as a shelter) and became the owner for 1 guilder. The building was thoroughly renovated by the tourist office, but in the storm of 16 February 1962 it disappeared from the scene for good. The house was rebuilt in 2000 at pole 25 on the initiative of the Cultural Historical Association, complete with signal ball and signpost. Later, the house was moved 1.5 kilometres to the west.
The drowning house can be visited all year round by covered wagon, beach bus or by walking. In the latter case, don't forget that you have to walk back. In the winter you can also use the beach taxi or a 4x4.
