With a length of no less than 12 kilometers, the Terschellinger polder extends over a considerable part of the island. Yet you never lose the island feeling, because the polder is only two kilometers wide. The Terschellinger polder actually consists of two parts: a higher part, which lies against the dunes and mainly consists of alder canals, and a lower part, which is formed by a vast and open meadow area containing a number of villages and duck decoys. Between the dunes and the Wadden dike are various transition areas, such as high/low, dry/wet, fresh/salt, sand/peat and sand/clay. Thanks to these differences, the polder has an exceptionally varied plant and animal life. And thanks to the cycle path that runs right through the polder, you can enjoy this.
